Where Does Favre Go from Here?

It’s official. The retirement papers have been filed. The wheel of uncertainty that is Brett Favre’s career has finally been put to rest. After much speculation, Brett Favre has finally decided to hang up his pads and retire. This comes as no surprise, as his season was a less-than-satisfactory end to an otherwise storybook career. Now that he is officially retired, everyone will be asking: What will he do next?

Favre has never been one to make decisions quickly, or easily. That’s why his speedy decision to retire this year has come as such a surprise. After a memorable summer last year, where he was visited by teammates in an effort to get him to return for another season, Favre led the entire sports world on a speculative ride as to whether or not his return was imminent. His decision to return to the NFL for one final go around was not looked upon well by the sports community, due to the belief that he should go out on top. Favre felt otherwise, and returned for the 2010-11 season. Unfortunately for Favre, that season was struck short by a series of injuries, ultimately ending up on the season-ending injury reserve. During the Vikings post game press conference after their season-ending loss to the Detroit Lions, when asked about retirement, he stated, “I know it's time, and that's OK. It is”. He has finally accepted the outcome of his career, and seems to be content with it.

Having filed his retirement papers to the NFL, Favre now has a few possibilities to pursue in his post-playing career. The most likely option will be spending an extended period of time away from the game that he has lived and breathed his entire life. Favre needs to spend time with his family. After all that happened with the allegations of sexual misconduct, Favre really needs to set things straight with his family, especially his wife. This would be good for him, as it would seemingly keep his mind off the game.

It is obvious that he doesn’t take to retirement kindly, though. After struggling previously with two retirements, staying away from football would not seem like a long term solution. One would think that he would someday return to the NFL as some sort of assistant coach. Two of the most plausible options would be as an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach. After surviving the dreadful, boring offense of Brad Childress, he must be aching to be a part of an offensive strategy with more gusto. Favre’s extensive knowledge could help create an explosive offensive system for any team with offensives woes. With Favre at the helm of an offense, the NFL would be sure to see a high powered, air-it-out offense.

Favre also has the credentials to obtain a front office job. After over 20 years in the NFL, he knows the ins and outs of the league. He has enough knowledge about players to be a good general manager someday, and he could really change an organization. He has displayed a level head throughout his career, and won’t let anything be done without a thorough examination or evaluation. His decision making skills on the field could translate well off the field in an executive role. He could help draft the next Brett Favre someday, if circumstances warrant it.

Lastly, he could continue his career as the Wrangler spokesman. Who knows, maybe someday he’ll even end up like Joe Montana and Karl Malone, as a spokesman for Sketchers, talking about possibly returning to the NFL for another season.

Whatever Favre’s future holds, one thing is certain- he is at peace with his decision to retire. “Again, I hold no regrets, and I can't think of too many players offhand that can walk away and say that. Individually and from a team standpoint, it was way more than I ever dreamed of”.
