Now That the Seahawks Season is Over, the QB Search Should Begin

Kyle Orton, Kevin Kolb, and Matt Flynn are all possible targets to be the next quarterback in Seattle
With the Seahawks season over, everything turns to draft day. The Seahawks have the 25th pick, and that raises a lot of questions. First, with the success of Matt Hasselbeck in the playoffs, Seattle has to answer the question of: What do we do for a QB? If the Seahawks are truly set on keeping Matty H, then one would have to pose the question of drafting a QB. The draft is full of many quarterbacks who are first-round caliber, like Ryan Mallett of Arkansas, Blaine Gabbert (Missouri), and hometown hero Jake Locker. Some even say Heisman winner Cam Newton is first round worthy, though I couldn't disagree more.

Many Seahawks fans point to Jake Locker as the quarterback of the future, but is he really the right guy? The Seahawks run a dink-and-dunk style passing offense, and Jake Locker doesn't really fit the mold with his run and gun style of play. He plays out of the pocket, and with the generally weak offensive line of the Seahawks, he is bound to get hit more Mark Bulger and Michael Vick combined. The Seahawks need to look for a bona fide pocket passer, but there won't be any really great ones available in the first round of the draft.

Another place the Seahawks definitely need to look is the free agent market. A couple of quarterbacks immediately catch the eye of any scout looking for a new QB to take over that role. Matt Flynn of Green Bay, and Kevin Kolb of the Eagles both displayed good skills playing quarterback for their injured counterparts on their respective teams. Either could be an up and coming quarterback for an aging Seahawks squad. Kolb would bring some prior experience to the Seahawks squad, and definitely fits their mold. Another QB who the Seahawks could potentially pursue, if it pans out, is Kyle Orton, of Denver. He lost his starting job to Tim Tebow, and if everything goes as planned, he won't be regaining that role any time soon. Jeremy Bates, the Seahawks Offensive Coordinator, used to be with the Denver Broncos, and has definite connections and familiarity with Orton.

In all reality, the Seahawks are probably going to neglect their need for a quarterback in the draft once again, and we are going to have to endure one last season of Hasselbeck. Guess we just have to wait and see where the Seahawks really want to go.
